How Can I Clean My Dentures and Avoid Bacteria Buildup?

Dentures provide a functional and aesthetic solution for many individuals, offering an affordable alternative to dental implants which may not be suitable due to health or financial considerations. However, maintaining your dentures properly is essential to prevent bacterial buildup that could lead to more serious health issues.

Typically made from polymer resin, dentures can develop a thick layer of biofilm if not cared for adequately. This biofilm can harbour over 10 billion microorganisms, including Candida, which thrives on the biofilm and can lead to conditions such as denture stomatitis. Together, bacteria like Streptococcus and the biofilm can increase their severity, posing significant health risks.

Elderly individuals using dentures may experience common issues like sore throats and fungal infections, which can escalate to more severe conditions including pneumonia, bacterial endocarditis, and even gastrointestinal infections due to the spread of bacteria from the gums to other parts of the body. Proper denture care can help prevent these potentially life-threatening conditions.

Steps to Clean Your Dentures

Removal and Initial Rinse: Begin by removing your dentures and rinsing them under tap water to dislodge food particles.

Soaking: Place the dentures in a recommended cleansing solution. This prevents the dentures from drying out and maintains their shape.

Brushing: Using a soft-bristled brush or a special denture brush, gently clean all surfaces of the dentures, focusing especially on the parts that contact the gums to eliminate bacteria effectively.

Final Rinse: After brushing, always rinse the dentures with clean water before wearing them again.

Cleaning Agents for Dentures

While there are various products available for cleaning dentures, using the appropriate cleaning agent is crucial for effective maintenance:

Vinegar: Known for its ability to kill bacteria and remove biofilm, vinegar is a common home remedy. However, it should be used cautiously as it can create micro-pits in the dentures where bacteria might collect.

Baking Soda: Useful for its gentle cleaning properties, baking soda can help remove biofilm without being too abrasive.

Sodium Hypochlorite: Highly effective in killing bacteria and fungi, this agent should be used as directed by a dental professional as it can corrode metal parts and roughen acrylic surfaces.
